How is EMDR used in therapy?

EMDR therapy is both a therapeutic tool and trauma treatment that helps you address the challenges of your past, your present, and your future. Its effectiveness has been shown in many clinical studies and is the therapy  of choice for traumatic memories and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

EMDR is effective with adults, youth, and children. The therapists at Healthy Families of Albuquerque bring a wealth of wisdom and training to their skillful use of this powerful therapeutic tool.

  • Clinical trials demonstrate its efficacy in alleviating PTSD symptoms caused by traumatic events.

  • While its effectiveness for other psychological issues is not fully established, clinicians may use it for patients with distressing life experiences.

our approach

EMDR is an effective treatment for trauma and chronic pain because it uses a structured eight-phase approach, addressing past/present/future aspects of the stored dysfunctional memory.

During processing phases in EMDR therapy clients attend to memories in multiples of 15 – 30 second sets while simultaneously focusing on two different types of attention stimulus (e g., therapist directed lateral eye movement, alternate hand tapping, or bilateral auditory tones).

  • Alternating dual attention and personal association is repeated multiple times during sessions.

  • It helps patients connect what they've said with new information, enhancing treatment.

  • Expect changes after each session, like unexpected surfacing of old memories or discounting of others due to uncertain relevance.
